Allotment Rents to rise by 2.5%

Below is an email circulated by BHCC on 12 September.

Hello Brighton & Hove allotment tenant,
This is a round-robin email to all BHCC allotment tenants for whom we have an email address.

We are currently preparing for the 2014-15 allotment invoices to be sent out in the first week of October.

Rent we charge rent based on the square metre size of individual plots. For 2014-2015, we are charging 0.2927p per square metre, the charge for 2013-2014 was 0.2856p. No rent increase was put forward at the annual council budget meeting for 2014-2015 so the annual allotment rent will rise this year will be 2.5% to take into account annual inflation, in line with council policy.

Invoicing Because of recent staff shortages we have been unable to send out the usual pre-invoicing letter to tenants in August. As a result we will apply concessions retrospectively for 2014-15 billing, as long as proof of eligibility is provided prior to the invoice being paid. We will then adjust the amount you need to pay against your annual invoice accordingly. Any concession applied to your allotment rent will be clearly printed on your annual invoice.

Proof of Concessions

Senior Citizens- if you have just celebrated your 60th birthday then you can claim a concession. Please send official proof of age, ideally a copy of your birth certificate, driving licence, bus pass or passport to gain a 25% discount. If you are currently in receipt of a concession by having previously provided proof for Senior Citizen status (over 60 years of age) there is no need to do anything.

Income support- Recent documentation (dated within the last three months) of proof of income support needs to be provided annually to the allotments team to ensure a 25% concession. Accepted documents are benefits statement from DWP showing the majority of your income is from benefits. Tax Credit and Housing Benefit statements are not eligible.

Long Term Disability for people who are unable to work recent documentation of proof is also required from DWP benefits statement i.e. Personal Independence Payment, Employment and Support Allowance.

Full Time Student proof of full time student status (verifying that you are a full time student in the year 2014-15) needs to be sent to the Allotment Service annually, documentation has to be your student registration. A student union card is not acceptable proof.


Giving up your plot - if you are thinking of giving up your plot now would be the ideal time to do so to prevent you from receiving an invoice in October. Please inform us in writing or via email (not by phone) as we require written confirmation.
